Cabrera

Cabrera is considered one of the most beautiful places in the Dominican Republic. The famous Playa Grande beach, which literally means "Big Beach" is situated here, and is a big attraction for the area. In fact, Condé Nast travel magazine called Playa Grande "one of the most beautiful beaches in the world." Along with the soft, powder-like sand, the beach is lined with tall coconut palms and bordered on each side by rugged coral formations and cliffs. The big waves this area enjoys makes it a popular spot for surfing and body/boogie boarding. It really is a beautiful sight to behold.

The coastal area around Cabrera has some of the most exclusive private villas in the Dominican Republic, with unbelievable views of the ocean. Luxury villas such as Villa Castellamonte in Orchid Bay Estates regularly play host to famous celebrities and important visitors from around the world looking for an exclusive vacation.

One of the top golf courses in the world is located just 5km East of Playa Grande in Cabrera, a Robert Trent Jones designed 18 hole golf course. Many visitors to the area come for the world-class golf, luxury accomodation and amazing scenery. The golf course was designed to take full advantage of the area's beauty with ten holes following the cliffs overlooking the incredibly blue Atlantic Ocean below.

Aside from the beautiful natural beaches, Cabrera has rivers, exotic vegetation and many natural attractions. There is even a National Park reserve located in El Breton, a small section of Cabrera called Cabo Frances Viejo.

Cabrera is unspoilt compared to most tourist destinations. Situated in the María Trinidad Sánchez province of the Dominican Republic, it is at the eastern end of the county's north coast, at the western extreme of the Bahía Escocesa, 130 kilometers north of Santo Domingo, and 120 km east of Puerto Plata on the North Coast, where an international airport is situated.

As Cabrara is still fairly underdeveloped, it is possible to pick up amazing beachfront development land at extremely reasonable prices. That ocean front villa you always fancied maybe more achievable than you think!

Other important towns in the María Trinidad Sánchez province are Rio San Juan, Nagua and El Factor.

Interestingly, Cabrera was originally named 'Tres Amarras', the name it used to be called since its foundation day on July 1, 1891. The city was renamed to 'Cabrera' in honor of the hero of the Capotillo Battle, General José Cabrera. Today Cabrera has a territorial area of 276 km². With a population of over 39,000, Cabrera unlike most towns located on the coast does not depend so much on tourism. Cabrera’s main source of income is still cattle, meat, and milk. In the agricultural aspect, production of coconuts and rice are noticeable sources as well.

Other local beaches include Playa Precioso, El Diamante (Diamond Beach), Playa La Entrada, El Caleton de Dario (Orchid Bay Beach), El Caleton del Medio, and El Caleton Chiquito.
